Bhutan government’s telecom sector has been offering mobile service and internet service to the citizens since 2000. As part of the government’s plans to extend their services, they wanted to build a secure chat app that avoided the privacy threats of other popular messaging apps.
The data leakages faced by its citizens on using other messaging apps was Bhutan’s government's major concern. To address the issue they wanted to develop an encrypted messaging platform. Furthermore, with the restrictions imposed by the telecom sector of Bhutan on in-app calls of popular platforms, offering free audio & video calls without data usage was another priority of the telecom sector.
“Connecting people through free chat, voice & video calls with a privacy-centered approach is always an uphill battle. Overcoming that hurdle without support of the internet was a monumental challenge.”A seamless cross platform messaging application was developed leveraging MirrorFly SDK. With data protection being the primary objective of the telecom sector of Bhutan, on premise hosting of data was implemented. Utilizing IP's whitelisting, audio & videos calls were provided free of cost to Bhutanese citizens without data usage.
With the integration of MirrorFly’s in-app messaging and calling features, the app has proved to be extremely successful. More importantly, the government has achieved its goal of ensuring the right to privacy for its nation’s citizens. The successful cross-platform application has attracted over 100,000 downloads. The users seem to be enjoying the app’s features and interface as well with the app having a 4.1 rating on playstore.
